Students in the perioperative environment will gain a better understanding of the emphasis placed on patient safety when transporting patients with varying levels of consciousness; use of lasers, tourniquets, and electrosurgical units when positioning patients for surgical interventions; and therapeutic uses of heat and cold.  The Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK is the regulatory body for nurses, midwives and specialist practitioners.

Expectations of performance and content application became more complex and sophisticated as students progressed from their junior to senior years.  Much perioperative course development and implementation occurred in the 1980s as a result of Project Alpha, which was designed by AORN's National Committee on Education to encourage coordinated efforts in perioperative nursing education between AORN chapters and local schools of nursing.

The admitting high school grade point average (GPA) is 3.  To become a nurse within the United Kingdom, one must at the very minimum hold a Diploma in Nursing and have trained for three years, or equivalent if from overseas.
