For every space that was filled in the college of nursing in 1998 and 1999, five qualified students were rejected.  Although emphasis in each course is on practicing nursing care related to course objectives, different clinical sites and patient populations offer different opportunities for learning.

Association membership also provides a number of networking opportunities.  Students in the perioperative environment will gain a better understanding of the emphasis placed on patient safety when transporting patients with varying levels of consciousness; use of lasers, tourniquets, and electrosurgical units when positioning patients for surgical interventions; and therapeutic uses of heat and cold.

The objective for student learning was the integration into clinical practice of content taken in corequisite or prerequisite courses in a baccalaureate curriculum.  This wealth of historical nursing knowledge should not be ignored.

To help meet course objectives, all students participated in a variety of patient-centered activities and nursing interventions.  Descriptive statistics, analysis of frequency (ie, chi-square), and repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were calculated.

As nurse historian Olga Church asserted (1993) "graduates of nursing programs who have not been exposed to their heritage have not been properly oriented to the profession" (p.  To fully receive the benefits of membership, you need to be engaged with the association.

Association membership also provides a number of networking opportunities.  The omission of perioperative patient care is a missed opportunity in nursing education.

In the US, there are over 200 specialties within nursing.  Membership in a professional nursing organization, like AORN, also provides nurses with opportunities to exchange ideas and collaborate on issues and projects as they face the challenges of providing quality health care.
