by Lee Dobbins

When you hear the word 'hypnosis', you typically think of a doctor dangling a swinging watch in front of a patient or a comedian on stage 'hypnotizing' people to do funny things. It's called conversational hypnosis, and even you can use it to convince people of anything you want!

This is actually a technique that's been in use for ages, you may have even had it happen to you and were unaware because it is so subtle. You see, there are no swinging watches or snapping of fingers, you can actually put people into a state of hypnosis or autosuggestion simply with the words you use and they way you use them in normal every day conversation.

Luckily, you don't have to be a doctor, magician or comedian to make use of conversational hypnosis, It is simply employing conversational techniques in a specific way so as to bypass your subjects critical mind and make them open to your suggestions. We do this every day when we try to get someone to 'see things our way' or ask them for a favor. By using this technique you can gain empathy and understanding for your views, often your subjects will be engrossed in what you have to say and easily change their minds to agree with you!

In fact, perhaps the most interesting use was by Dr. Milton Erikson who used conversational hypnosis to help his patients in the 1940's and 1950's because hypnosis itself was banned. However, someone let the cat out of the bag and Dr Erikson was called to a disciplinary hearing by the American Medical Association. Ironically, he used his powers of conversational hypnosis on the board and instead of revoking his license, all the charges against him were dropped and the next year the AMA reversed their ban on hypnosis allowing all doctors to use it!
