Understanding Goth Fashion
While black has been the main staple of Goth fashion for years, it takes much more than simply putting on a black outfit to achieve the Goth look. While the Goth subculture itself is not about fashion, the way you dress tells the world how you perceive yourself.
What is the purpose of dressing like a Goth? To express yourself. While black is always a good color to start with, many Goths feel free to enhance it with shades of grey and white.
More and more, you see rich colors such as hot pink, dark red, and royal blue as part of Goth outfits. But still, one thing remains consistent: Black is the primary color.
Accessorizing is very important to dressing in the Goth style. Lots of jewelry, and often piercings, are a hallmark of the style. Jewelry is silver or pewter, and usually chunky or dramatic.
What's also popular are religious symbols, which are frequently worn as pendants. It's an important part of one's identity. You'll often see a lot of gloves and sleeves (arm warmers). Patterned tights are common. Tights that are striped or fishnet are another way to inject color into Goth fashion.
It's very easy to find clothes that will help you dress in a Goth style. The local thrift store is a great place to start. You can find lots of stuff there for cheap that you can alter!cut it, dye it, or add studs to make it truly yours.
Of course, because there are more people than ever interested in Goth now, many stores cater to this and have lines of clothing available that will suit as well. By adding your own accessories and jewelry, your outfit can be unique.
Remember, there are thousands of different ways to dress according to Goth fashion. It's all about expressing who you are, and no two Goths will look exactly alike.
