The Secret to Writing a Perfect Best Man Speech

by Candace Smith

Chances are, if you've been chosen as a best man, you know the groom pretty well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. To help you prepare for the speech, here are just a few things you should remember.

*Plan it! Don't wing it. Even if you're quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person's mind can go completely blank without warning.

At the very least, write down a few key phrases and points to bring up if you don't feel like writing the whole thing.

*Humor is good, but don't forget to be serious. Sure those are conflicting elements, but it's important to remember. If you're not a little bit funny, you could wind up boring the wedding guests.

But with that in mind, it's crucial to remember that your best man speech is to be a tribute to the couple and their future. You can be sure that the two of them take their marriage very seriously, and they want to know that you honor that. While sarcasm might be fun in the right situations, it is very dangerous territory and should NEVER be used in a wedding speech.

*Be concise. Please don't go on and on. If you can, try to practice in front of at least one other person. Watch their eyes. If the eyes start glazing over, it's time to find something to cut out from your speech.

*Careful with the anecdotes. Whatever you do, avoid telling stories about old wives and girlfriends, and avoid reminding all the guests about something particularly embarrassing. This won't endear you to your friend's new wife. If your buddy's wife doesn't like you, don't expect to see much of your friend after the wedding is over.

*Talk about something you like or admire about the bride-- if it's appropriate! See the previous tip about endearing yourself to her.

*Last but not least, be sincere. You were chosen as best man for a reason. Remember that, and share your joy in your good friend's happiness, and your best man speech will be remembered with thanks.
