There are basically two types of acne scars: pitted or depressed and pigmented.

Pitted acne scarring is caused by a diminution of tissue derived from harm to underlying dermal tissue. Depressed scars have an "ice-pick" look, with sharp jiggered edges, or can be softer scars, looking much like scars derived from chicken-pox.
