Ringing of the Ears

by JJ Currie

Strange ringing and buzzing in your ears is not a unique problem, but one shared by millions of people. The medical term for this condition is tinnitus, specifically defined as perceiving sounds that don't have any source from the outside. People of all ages can develop this condition. It can also be experiences as a hissing, clicking, or even roaring sound, and may be high or low in pitch. Tinnitus often increases in volume when the outside environment is peaceful, so some sufferers can't sleep easily at night.

Tinnitus, is it a disease or an illness? Truth is, it is not a disease but rather a symptom of a disease which may be more serious than ringing in the ears. Many of these diseases are related to blood circulation, i. e. high blood pressure, anemia, atherosclerosis and/or malformation of the capillaries. Other causes of tinnitus might be allergies, ear infections, Meniere disease or the use of certain medications. All of these conditions and more can cause the unwanted sound of ringing in the ears.

What then is the implication of tinnitus not being a disease? One is that there is no cure for it. It might worry us, but if we look at the positive side of things, we must drop all those worries because various treatments are available to help make it bearable. The first thing we should know is that there are natural tinnitus treatments. These are remedies that are practical in a sense that we can do them by ourselves and that we do not have to spend much. One is to avoid going to places that would expose our ears to loud noise. Or when it it is inevitable, hearing protection devices such as earplugs and special ear muffs should be worn. Another is to avoid the aggravating factors like salty foods, caffeine, alcohol and nicotine. So if we are lovers of coffee, soda and cigarettes, then perhaps it is time to change our diet and hobbies a little bit. Protein, choline, zinc, vitamins A, B, and E - these are the vitamins and minerals that our diet should be rich in. Proper exercise would also help since it improves blood circulation.

When natural remedies alone are not enough, the irritating noise can be made less noticeable through the use of devices like maskers or hearing aids. A good, side-effect-free option is to try homeopathic tinnitus remedies or herbal supplements. You could also try some of the various other alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, meditation, or reflexology. If stress management is needed, some available options are counseling, tinnitus retraining therapy, and cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Besides the items mentioned above, a person should also avoid getting stressed as that causes the ringing in the ears to become worse. Maintaining a positive attitude makes living with tinnitus easier.
