Effective Problem Solving Through Open Communication
Problems will always be around regardless of where you are, but you can minimize them by maintaining a good working relationship with the people around you. You can do this by establishing open lines of communication and learning to listen well to the ideas of other people.
Defining the Concept of Open Communication
It's a really simple concept. Open communication is simply getting everyone's feelings, and ideas on the table. Let everyone involved say what bothered them, how the felt, and how they think it can be fixed.
Despite being so simplistic, open communication is actually the best way to conquer whatever obstacles come your way. From resolving serious issues like international conflicts between nations to almost mundane concerns like selecting the wall color for the new office conference room, open communication is the most effective means to arrive at a solution.
Techniques For Easy Problem-Solving
* Find the best way of communicating between parties in conflict. Some people opt to discuss face to face right away. Others need more time for allowing water to settle under the bridge. In this case, written communication or talking through the telephone might be a better option.
* Avoid taking too much control. Let the other person make suggestions and come to a fair compromise. Plus, watch your tone. Keep it cool and calm. Don't sound accusatory.
* Do not take it personally. Keep in mind that you are having issues with the situation at hand and not with your co-worker. Because of this, you must never cross the boundary and make personal attacks on the individual.
* Make sure everyone at work and at home know there's an open door policy. Which means they can always express any feelings, opinions, or frustrations freely as long as their are calm and respectful. This will eliminate built up frustrations.
* In case a conflict does arise and you find yourself in the middle, you can help resolve it by not taking sides. Instead, allow both sides to take turns in airing out their differences. Solicit their suggestions on how to solve the problem, while also giving your own suggestions.
Open Communication In Personal Relationships
The problem-solving techniques that we have mentioned can be used not only to solve problems in the workplace. You can also use them to improve the important personal relationships in your life. With these techniques, you will soon have less frequent conflicts with your spouse, and your kids will be more articulate in expressing their thoughts, as well as in listening to others.
Practice Makes Perfect
In the beginning, you may find yourself having a difficult time being completely open in communicating with others. During the discussion of a conflict, feeling may still be hurt and grudges may still be kept. But as you keep practicing open communication, you and your co-workers will gradually get used to the concept and will eventually be able to use it in resolving issues without too many problems.
This open communication technique also works with rumors around work. Confront people and put everything out on the table. You'll see sooner or later everyone in the workplace will pick up on your habit.
