Acne Vulgaris, or acne, is a common skin problem on the face, and sometimes on the back and chest. Although acne is most common in teens and adolescents, the more severe forms usually affect adults. Not only can severe acne have serious physical impacts, but it usually also causes a great deal of psychological pain for the affected patients.

Acne includes many types of blemishes. Adolescent acne most commonly includes blackheads and whiteheads, or zits. However, the more severe forms of acne can include much larger and deeper blemishes that are physically damaging to your skin and can be painful as well. Severe acne vulgaris includes conditions such as Pyoderma Faciale, Gram-negative Folliculitis, Acne Fulminans, and Acne Conglobata.

Types of Severe Acne:

The first type is called Pyoderma Faciale, and it is only found in young women. Because of it rosacea-like, reddish color, sometimes Pyoderma Faciale is called rosacea fulminans. It is characterized by large, painful blemished on the face. It starts abruptly, and is usually only present up to a year. It is only on the face, and it is not associated with oily skin. It can cause severe scarring in a short period of time.

Next is Gram-negative Folliculitis, which is caused by a bacterial infection. It is not true acne, although its appearance is similarly red with pimples. Patients who have taken antibiotics over a long period of time can get this condition as a result. It can arise from the use of oral or topical antibiotics. Sometimes treating this condition can prove difficult because it does not respond well to antibiotics.

Next is Acne Fulminans, which is a condition that is characterized by large, painful nodule-like blemishes on the skin. Unlike other acne, it can be accompanied by ulcers, fever, and joint pain. It can cause serious scarring in a short time, and with little or no warning. It is resistant to antibiotics, and so it can be difficult to get rid of. Acne Conglobata is the most serious form of acne. It is differentiated because of its deep, sometimes painful nodules under the skin.
