How to Determine Comic Book Value

by Candace Right

Did you unearth a whole stash of comic books while cleaning the attic? Maybe you happened on someone's comic book collection at a garage or tag sale and picked them up with the idea of making a few dollars. Wherever you've gotten them, and whether you have five comic books or five hundred, you need to know how to determine comic book value.

You have a lot of ways to determine the value of a comic book. You need to know what kind of condition the comic book is in, first of all, based on specific guidelines. The rarity and desirability of a comic book is another big thing that can give you a good idea of what kind of price you can get for it.

There are two ways to determine comic book value, also called its grade. You browse online to find resources that will help you determine its grade. Alternatively, you can consult the CGC (Comics Guaranty Company) by mail or by going to a comic book convention. These are the grading terms you should be familiar with: Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Fine, Very Fine, Near Mint, Mint. There are books and guides out there that can help you determine the grade, but the same information can easily be found online too.

You'll find that it is much easier to determine comic book value once you know the grade. Visit eBay and check out the auctions for comic books, since this will give you a good idea of what they're selling for. However, you should be aware that values will vary from issue to issue, based on special events that might have occurred in the issue, printing errors, or rarity.

Another thing you can do is buy a price guide on comic books; there are different ones to choose from. Some guides will give you one price for each comic. Some give you a range of values depending on the comic's condition. Last but not least, use a good search engine to look up information about a specific issue. Join online communities and interact with other collectors.
