Surgical Scar Removal

Surgery is sometimes the only alternative for removing unsightly acne scars. In this case there are two types of procedures that are used: punch excision and subdermal incision or subcision. Ice pick scars, and other atrophic scars, are usually treated with punch excision while rolling scars are primarily treated using subcision.

Punch excision includes the removal of the scar using a cookie cutter type instrument. The edges of excised skin are then sutured together to form a small straight scar. If the excised skin is too large, a skin graft is used to close the wound.

Subcision is performed by introducing a small scalpel or small scissors beneath the skin to release the upper layers of skin from the scar tissue below. This procedure cause some bruising as blood rushes in to occupy the space between the skin and scar tissue. Nonetheless, this is exactly what helps level out the skin.

Alternatives to Surgical Scar Removal

Scars can also be treated by using scar creams or scar care gels. This type of treatment may be a better option for minor scars or new scars. They can also be used after surgery to promote scar less healing.

Natural scar gels and creams should contain ingredients that help break down scars and promote the growth of new skin cells. For example, snail serum is a gentle natural ingredient that is known to help dissolve scar tissue. It also promotes the production of healthy cells and increases the production of elastin and collagen.

You will want to stay away from products that contain collagen because they won't help repair scar tissue. In fact, collagen molecules are too large to penetrate our skin pores. This means that the product cannot reach the site of the scar to repair it.

Laser treatment is also a viable alternative. However, it is not always appropriate for your type of scar tissue. So, first consult with a dermatologist to see if you are eligible for laser treatment.
