Home Security Articles: The Impact Of Sean Taylor's Death

by Rex Freiberger

Because of the recent tragic death of football star Sean Taylor due to a home invasion, more people are reading home security articles and are showing more interest in taking precautions to prevent the same happening to them. Many of these people will buy a new home security door lock that is an upgrade from their current lock.

When you are reading home security articles you will find that most have common themes. Having the best home security lock on each door to the outside, and keeping them locked is probably the most common theme. Alarms and home security services are also mentioned frequently, but good locks are the most important first step.

A lock is worthless if it isn't used, so all family members should get in the habit of locking doors. Please don't keep a spare key in an obvious hiding place, such as on top of a door frame or under the welcome mat. If you are afraid of accidentally locking yourself out, leave a spare key with a neighbor you trust, or put one in a lock box with a code.

The different types of locks and how safe they are is mentioned often in home security articles. Old locks with skeleton keys are not great or safe, but it is also easy to defeat many modern locks also. If it's possible to break your lock with a credit card, then anyone can.

A security lock is only as good as its box which needs to be anchored securely in the door frame using 3" screws or nails or larger. Make sure it is rated "kick proof" and that the bolt itself is at least 1 1/2 "long. If there is window glass near the location of the lock, a special type of lock is required which can't be opened just by breaking the glass and reaching in to turn the lock. Before installing a new lock, be sure to check the local building codes to make sure you're within the code.

Many home security articles have been written regarding safety measures you should take if you're at home and your safety system fails. The best method is to hide in a closet with a cell phone and immediately call 911. If you have no opportunity to hide and are faced with intruders, make sure you never look them directly in the eye. Try to notice as many things about them as you can without obviously staring at them. However, the bottom line is that it's better not to have to deal with this situation at all by having high quality locks installed correctly before the problem happens.

Since the tragic death of NFL player Sean Taylor, who was a victim in a home invasion, there have been numerous home security articles and an increased interest in the security measures you can take to avoid such an occurrence. For many people, this will mean a new home security door lock that is an improvement over the one they currently have. Many articles will state the importance of having a secure home security lock and making sure it is locked on all doors that lead outside. However, using locks is the basis for a defending your home against break-ins.
