Practicing Nail Care the Proper Way
Nail care may not seem very important for some people as they think that since nails are constantly growing, broken nails can easily be replaced by newer ones within a couple of days. This might be true, but waiting for your nail to grow back takes a very long time and it is usually very painful to deal with. Broken and deformed nails are also very ugly to look at so it would not be presentable to the people that you meet.
There are things that should be done to the nails, but there are also many things that should not be done. The basic things of nail care such as trimming the nails often and keeping them clean are just some of the things that should be done. This way, other problems that may arise from not doing these practices are avoided.
One thing that a lot of people do but should not be done is the using of the nails as tools. Some use them for opening lids and letters, while others use them as a screwdriver. These actions will expose nails to mechanical damage and one wrong move may cause them to break. It is best to use the correct tools for these jobs and avoid using your nails at all costs.
Aside from mechanical damage, there are other ways as to how nails can be damaged. Exposing the nails to harmful chemicals such as bleach may cause nails to become dry and prone to cracking. Just because nails are hard does not mean that they will not be affected by these substances. Always wear protective equipment when dealing with such substances, or moisturize your hands afterwards if it is really unavoidable.
One area of your nails that you should be really careful is the cuticle area. This is because it is near the nail bed where your nail grows. This is the area that you should protect and clean frequently so that chances of infection and deformities forming in your nails are reduced.
One thing that you should avoid when dealing with nail problems is that some people tend to pull on their hangnails. This should be avoided at all costs as you will not be able to control how the nail is removed. In these situations, you should cut it using clippers even though you are already itching to remove them on your own. Filing your nails is a good practice to avoid the formation of hangnails.
Nail polish is also a good way to help protect your nails from getting damaged easily. But this should not be overdone and nails should be allowed to rest at times so that chemicals present in the polish will not cause discoloration or weakening of the nail. It is also best to avoid nail polish with formaldehyde as this is a carcinogen which may cause further complications in the future.
These are just a few simple things that you need to remember when taking care of your nails. It is important that you take care of your nails and be aware with what you are doing with them so that they may stay strong and healthy. For further knowledge about your nails, you may ask a dermatologist as to how to properly care for your nails.
